7 Signs you are in need of a massage

We all know massage helps us to relax and feel good.  But did you know your body lets you know when it needs one?

Here are the 7 most common signs…

  1. Aches and Pains

Aches and Pains in the neck, back, shoulder, hip, foot… you get the idea.  Those niggling pains should not be ignored as it is your body’s way of telling you something is wrong. We need to listen to our bodies more and massage may help to reduce or eliminate these nagging pains, before they become chronic.

  1. Reduction in range of motion

Maybe you can’t turn your head smoothly, be able to lift your arms up freely, or touch your toes like you once could. These are signs of muscles tightness and massage therapy can assist in reducing the stiffness while increasing your flexibility.

  1. Headaches

Headaches can be triggered by the tension in the muscles around your shoulders, back, and head. Regular maintenance massages can relieve these tension headaches, helps to reduce stress induced ones, and can even assist with the reduction of migraines and cluster headaches.

  1. Stressed Out

Stress has become a major factor in many of our lives and how we do or do not manage it, will eventually affect us on a cellular level.  Massage therapy helps to reduce stress by reducing the level of the stress hormone cortisol, while flooding the brain with the feel good endorphins.  An hour on a massage table can do wonders to the body, mind and soul.

  1. Poor Sleep

Not getting enough or good quality sleep is detrimental to our health. Sleep is incredibly important, as we recover and heal when we sleep. Massage therapy helps promote healthy sleep habits through body relaxation.  60 minutes of massage is about the same as 8 hours of sleep!

  1. Exercising

You have started your New Year’s resolution to get fit, participate in this year’s HBF Fun Run or even returning to Palates classes now that your kids are finally back a school.  Whatever the reason, when you start to challenge your body physically it is important to remain injury free and regular massage can help do so by reducing tension, improving your range of motion and stretching your muscles so you can remain active and help to achieve your goal.

  1. It’s been ages since your last massage

You haven’t had a massage for months, or even years.  While you might get one every day when you are relaxing in Bali, the benefits of massage are best when you receive them on a regular basis.  As a massage therapist I would recommend every 4-6 weeks for regular wellbeing and maintenance, and more regularly if you are training for a sporting event or if you are rehabilitating an injury.
